· Design trusses: Inevitably, a faulty design can lead to the failure of any structure. The roof truss should be designed to handle dead and live loads directed through the structure. The ends should be able to sustain loads adequately and easily.

Sawn lumber is widely used for the development of trusses on a small scale. Since the dimension lumber is not available in sizes and length, it is not generally used to develop solid truss. Similarly, engineered woods; for example, plywood is not generally employed for this purpose.

The roof truss must comprise a lower chord (horizontal) and upper chords (two) following the roofline. The chords are connected by web members that are oriented or projected to form a triangular shape. The design should be, in accordance, with the lumber for each member.

· Saw structural members: You have to saw the members, giving the perfect size or length once you have completed the design process. Employ lumber showing more than one length to create the lower chord; select the midspan to join the two pieces of the truss. You can angle each cut having strong joints to give a perfect fit against each other.

· Lay trusses: You have to lay truss members on the ground. Once you have cut down the web members and chord, arrange them to give it a shape of a truss. Make sure that connections fit well, sawing extra dimension or length (if required).

· Secure joints: Use gusset plates made of metal to secure the joints. While laying gusset plates (toothed) make sure that they cover each joint, ensuring plates cover each member equally. Use a hammer to ensure whether teeth get perfect fit and the plate perfectly gets flushed against the lumber. Turn the truss and repeat to complete the process.

Note: Alternatively, an individual can use plywood to create gusset plates.

· Install trusses: Once you have completed the development of trusses, lift them, and set them. Place them on the top of the plates, similar to placing a beam or joist. Secure them by toe-nailing them on the top plate. Use long purlins to brace them.
